The GDR government then started construction of the Berlin war, this began on the 13th of August 1961.  The inside German border was heavily mined and guarded and fenced.  The people of Berlin were left stunned and formal protests were a regular sight.   There were many well documented escape attempts, which can be seen in detail in the check point Charlie museum.  The wall came down on 9th November 1989, but by this point almost 200 people had lost their lives trying to get over it.

The turning point for Berlin was undoubtedly when the wall came down, check point Charlie is now a museum and viewed by thousands of tourists each year.  Berlin is a city that is well worth visiting, and has much in the way of culture and history to offer the tourist.  There are many nightclubs, restaurants and cafes, and for those who like walking and sight seeing there is plenty to see and do.  There are plenty of cities which are close by which are also worth a visit.  Cottbus is a city which is situated between Berlin and Dresden, on the River Spree.  There is much accommodation around this area Hotel Cottbus being one of them.
